It has been almost a month now that trump was put in office and many things not only across America but also across the world have changed. America was the land of freedom. The land were immigrants from all across the planet could come and restart their lives. Nobody wants to leave their home, not even refuges, however dictatorship and censorship can make it hard for someone to stay in an oppress country and until now America was the place they consider their hope.
Freedom is a value that all American citizen cherish. Being able to leave your house and live a free life is a luxury in certain part of the world. Those individuals who live oppressed have a dream. The dream to become a Free American one day. Such a dream is now merely impossible for many refugees. America was build by immigrants from all over the planet and now the people that build America stopped opening their arms to their own brothers. However, this is not new.
World War II prompted the largest displacement of human beings the world has ever seen—although today’s refugee crisis is starting to approach its unprecedented scale. But even with millions of European Jews displaced from their homes, the United States had a poor track record offering asylum. Most notoriously, in June 1939, the German ocean liner St. Louis and its 937 passengers, almost all Jewish, were turned away from the port of Miami, forcing the ship to return to Europe; more than a quarter died in the Holocaust. History repeats itself!
American still have values and morals and this is what makes it the greatest country of the world. We have to accept others and help others in their fight against evil. We have to help refugees if we have the power to do so. We have to help them rebuild their lives and maybe even help they gain freedom in their own house.
“They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.”
― Benjamin Franklin,
